Story Overview
Makoto Minami and his childhood friend Shusuke Waya were once a battery, or pitcher and catcher duo. When Shusuke moved away, he promised Makoto they’d meet again at the championships one day. Instead, Shusuke unexpectedly reappears at Makoto’s high school, saying he no longer plays baseball. Hokuto Shiratori, the captain and catcher, jokingly asks Shusuke to become the manager. The feelings of the three boys soon begin to unfurl as the last high school baseball season begins.

Blue Summer Haze has the love triangle set up of a character stuck in between a childhood friend who left and returned and a newer friend who has been supportive while the other was gone. While a common setup, Dondon keeps the story moving with the competition and drama of the final season of their high school sports career.

At the center of the story is Makoto, who had only picked up baseball because of Shusuke. He’s built up a prickly and harsh exterior in high school, but with Shusuke’s return it seemingly is starting to melt. And even though Shusuke’s promise fell through, he still seems to care about baseball. Like Hokuto, I wonder if he’ll eventually get his sparkles in his eyes back when playing! I really like his character design, and think the short hair and long lashes suit him well.

As for his suitors, their contrast sets up an interesting dynamic. Shusuke lacks Hokuto’s confidence and steadfastness, while Hokuto’s synergy with Makoto as a battery could be stronger. But despite the rivalry and jealousy toward each other, they both agree on wanting to help Makoto shine as a pitcher. They had some pretty interesting conversations, and I wonder how they’ll change down the line! When I felt one might have a lead, the story would throw a curve ball, keeping me engaged and wanting to know what will happen next.

P.S. Because I got so invested in the story, I ended up reading ahead up to volume 4, which just released in Japan (early digital). Volume 5, which will is set to release in Winter 2027, will be the final volume. Knowing what’s to come, I really recommend picking up Blue Summer Haze!
